Assessing Phenylalanine Blood Level in Children With Phenylketonuria in Southern Khorasan Province and Determining the Affecting Social and Demographic Factors

Background: Phenylketonuria is a metabolic disorder resulting from defect in phenylalanine metabolism with global prevalence of 1 10000. Delayed initiation dietary modification leads to brain injury and cognitive behavioral problems. The main objective this study was assess the demographic social factors affecting control patients having phenylketonuria Southern Khorasan Province, Iran. Methods: In cross-sectional descriptive-analytic which performed during summer 2019, total 32 out 37 known children adolescents Province were assessed. age gender patients, parents’ marital status, occupational educational level, distance between home clinic, number affected siblings documented. We not able contact five Province. Data analyzed by SPSS 16 software using Mann-Whitney U test Kruskal-Wallis test. significance level considered P<0.05. Results: Totally, Mean±SD 6.6±4.7 years enrolled among whom 23 male (71.9%) 9 female (28.1%). group 8.1±5.2 mg/dL. disease optimally controlled 14 (43.3%) poorly 18 (56.3%). There any statistically significant relation assessed factors. Conclusions: properly 43.3% population, 56.3% had poor control. variables. As cases South province limited, small sample size could be one limitations our study.
